LaBrae Local Schools 2013-2014 Bullying Report

The attached report provides data on the types of bullying that occurred at LaBrae Local Schools during the 2013-2014 school year.  Information is also provided on the types of administrative action taken for various incidents.

Title I survey for Parents of Elementary, Intermediate and Middle School students

Title I school wide is a federal program designed to help all students reach high academic standards.  The purpose of this questionnaire is to gather information on how well the school communicates with parents.  Please take a few minutes to respond to the questions below.  Your feedback will be used to improve parent communication and parent involvement activities at the school.  Suggestions on how we can better help students at school and at home are welcome.  Thank you in advance for providing your input.

Title I survey for Parents of Elementary, Intermediate and Middle School students


Parents, letters have been mailed to all students identified has not having complete immunization documentation on file. If you receive a letter please take time over the summer to have your child’s updated shot record faxed to the school. Additionally, all students entering 7th grade must have a Tdap booster on file. Information was given to all sixth grade students to bring home. All shot records must be on file by September 30, 2014.

Parent Roadmaps to Understanding the Third Grade Reading Guarantee

2014-2015 Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten Registration will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and then from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Bascom Elementary School.  Child must be 5 years old by August 1, 2014.  The following documents are needed at the time of registration:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Shot Record
  • 2 Recent Proofs of Residency (examples: utility bill, pay stub, property taxes, car insurance, and/or Ohio Job and Family Service paperwork)  
  • Custody Papers (if applicable)

Strep Throat Alert

Parents, be aware we are seeing several cases of strep throat in our elementary grades.  If your child is complaining of symptoms consistent with strep throat please consult your health care provider for diagnosis and treatment.  Common symptoms of strep throat vary, but may include:

  • Fever
  • Red, sore throat, with pus spots, swollen tender glands
  • Vomiting

If your child is diagnosed please keep him/her home for 24-48 hours after appropriate diagnosis and treatment, or per your health care provider’s instructions.

Winter Walking

Indoor winter walking will be available for LaBrae district residents at Bascom Elementary School.  The building will be open to district resident November 6 – April 24 between 4pm 7pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  The building is not open during scheduled breaks or closures due to weather.  Please confine your walking to the hallways only.  Do not enter classrooms, gym, or the media center.  Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and supervised.  All participants walk at their own risk.

Success By 6

The Success By 6 program, taught by Ms. Molly Schwab and Mrs. Lynn Kondoleon, was a big hit this year at Bascom Elementary.  Thank you to the United Way of Mahoning County for funding this program!  Children received three weeks of intensive instruction with daily breakfast and snacks.  The program was concluded, on Friday August 2, with a luncheon where the children all received a special nutrition tracker and a backpack full of supplies for the upcoming school year.

Pink Eye

Parents be aware that we are starting to notice several cases of pink eye in grades K-2.

If you observe the following symptoms please do not send your child to school. If you suspect pink eye consult your child’s doctor for appropriate diagnosis & treatment.

  • Redness in and around the eye
  • Eyes that are puffy & sore
  • Itching, burning, or stinging eyes
  • Watery eyes, or discharge from the eyes
  • Eyelids that are crusty or stuck together upon waking

Tips for prevention:

  • Keep hands away from the eye area
  • Wash hands often with soap & water & rinse well
  • Never share your eye medications or use someone else’s medication
  • Use disposable tissues
  • Wash towels & bedding in hot water
  • Anyone with pink eye should not share towels & washcloths with the rest of the household

LaBrae Acceleration Information

LaBrae Local Schools does provide opportunities for families to have their child, where appropriate, to be given consideration for academic acceleration.  Parents should read the District policy on acceleration.  Parents can access the policy through the following link:  LaBrae Board of Education Policies.  Once you are redirected to the policies, click on the policy section 5000 Students.  Find policy 5410: Promotion, Acceleration and Retention. 

Additionally, parents should read the acceleration  notice.  Should a parent like to make a referral, the parent can print off the referral form located on the District website and submit it to the building principal for consideration.
