Student Drug Testing

The 2015-2016 school year marks the implementation of LaBrae's student drug testing program.  Throughout the previous school year, the LaBrae Board of Education engaged in ongoing discussion about the value of a student drug testing program for LaBrae Local Schools.  Once the Board committed to moving forward with passing a policy permitting the drug testing of students, the administration was charged with developing a testing program.  Research on drug testing programs included analyzing programs currently implemented in other schools throughout the Mahoning Valley.  Additionally, the administration evaluated drug testing vendors, and Great Lakes BioMedical was approved recently by the Board of Education as the authorized provider of drug testing services.

LaBrae's drug testing program is designed to support students and encourage good decision making.  Students who participate on an athletic team in grades 7-12, and student drivers comprise the portion of the student body that will be subject to drug testing.  Student-athletes will be required to take one baseline test each year.  This test is conducted in the pre-season of the sport in which they first participate in the year.  Random tests will be conducted multiple times during the year.  Moreover, when the random drug screenings are administered, student drivers are added to the pool of students who are subject to testing.  Parents of students who are not participating in a sport, or who do not drive to school, can choose to have their child opt into the random pool.  When a parent chooses to opt-in their child, the parent bears the cost of the test if their child is selected for testing.  All students and parents are required to complete consent forms for testing.

See the PDF attachment below for greater detail regarding LaBrae's student drug testing program.  Should you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Mr. Jeff Starkey, High School Principal, or Mr. Todd Rowe, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director.

Haylee Harford Division II Girls State Golf Champion

2014 OHSAA STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
GIRLS DIVISION II
October 10 and 11, 2014
The Ohio State University Gray Golf Course, Columbus

Haylee Harford put the final touch on an incredible senior season by capturing the Division II Girls State Golf Championship.  She posted a first round score of -2 under par 68 that placed her in a tie for the lead and ensured her a spot in the final group for Saturdays 18 hole shootout.  During the last round of the tournament, Haylee played some incredible golf.  She continued to hit clutch shots as the pressure mounted leading into the final holes.  Her final round score was a +3 over par 73.  The total score of 141 gave Haylee a 1 stroke victory and the State Championship.

Congratulations on a fantastic season and bringing home a State Championship!

Haylee Harford is Heading to Columbus to Compete for a State Championship in Golf

One of our students, Haylee Harford, is heading to Columbus to compete for a State Championship in golf.  This year, in the All American Conference, Haylee competed in the boys division.  How well did she play?  She not only led all golfers in the AAC in scoring during the season, but she also dominated the AAC tournament by beating all the players, even players from larger schools, such as Boardman, Canfield, Harding & Austintown Fitch.

Just this season, Haylee has set two individual LaBrae records:

She shattered the previous season average, set in 1989, by averaging an under par 35.1 over 14 matches and Haylee also owns the best 9 hole score by shooting a 4 under par round of 32.

Her tournament run so far looks like this:

Out of 85 golfers at the sectional tournament in Punderson, Haylee finished in 1st place with a 3 over 75.

Out of 72 qualifiers that made it to the Districts in Canton, Ohio, Haylee again was the best golfer on the course, shooting an unbelievable 4 under par 68.

In other words, she is really, really good!

We are very proud to have Haylee Harford represent LaBrae High School in the Ohio State tournament this weekend in Columbus.

It is a great day to be a Viking!
